Measles

Measles symptoms

Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease that is caused by the measles virus. Children in particular are often affected by this disease. Measles is considered dangerous in infants and young children. The virus is transmitted via droplet infections. At the beginning, flu-like symptoms such as high fever, cough and runny nose appear. The characteristic rash with red spots, the so-called measles rash, follows later.

Measles weaken the immune system. Bronchitis, otitis media or pneumonia and brain inflammation can occur as possible secondary diseases. In individual cases, life-threatening complications from a measles infection threaten.

Measles vaccination

The measles cases have recently risen sharply in Germany. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the number of diseases in Germany in 2017 was more than two and a half times the previous year. The World Health Organization (WHO) advises widespread vaccination and refers to regions such as North and South America, where the disease can be regarded as virtually eradicated due to a high vaccination rate.
