The rock rose (Cistus incanus) comes from southern Europe. The shrub with the fragrant pink-red flowers does not belong to the roses, but to the family of the rock rose family, which consists of around twenty types of rock rose. The gray-haired Cistus incanus is said to have a special healing effect, although various types of cystus are now used as tea.
Use in antiquity
The use of rock rose dates back to the fourth century BC. At that time, this plant was mainly used for religious rituals. It contains a large amount of resin. This is called labdanum and was used in ancient times to treat skin diseases. In some areas of Greece, cystus tea has been drunk throughout the year, summer and winter. In the meantime, it is becoming increasingly popular with us and is recognized by a wide variety of healing effects.
Ingredients and effects
The rock rose contains tannins, essential oils and polyphenols. This is a special combination, which in turn is noticeable in the healing effects. The polyphenols are known as antioxidants. The subgroup is flavonoids, of which this plant contains twelve important ones.
Above all, ellagic acid, which also occurs in pomegranate. It is said to have an anti-cancer effect. Another flavonoid is naringenin, known from grapefruit, which has a spectrum of action in the area of the metabolic syndrome. Celery, many other vegetables and also Cistus incanus contain the flavonoid apigenin, which is anti-cancer and is also said to have a positive effect on glucose metabolism.
The rock rose works:
- wound healing,
- and immune boosting.
Cistus for flu
A few years ago, studies with the rock rose (Cystus052) were carried out at the Charité in Berlin. The symptoms of the participants in the cyst group decreased quite quickly, just like the inflammation parameter CRP. The polyphenols contained in the rock rose wrap around the virus, preventing it from attaching to the host cell, without which the virus cannot survive.
Children affected by neurodermatitis were treated externally with cystus tea twice a day. They also drank a cup of rock rose tea a day. In 64 percent of the treated children, there was a significant improvement in the complexion.
Protection for the heart - antioxidant effect
The rock rose has a high antioxidant effect - much more than green tea or elderberry juice. Scientists have discovered that this plant contains a very special combination of antioxidants. The daily dose of vitamin C is contained in a shot glass of fully concentrated cystus sud. Apparently there are many over 100 year olds on the Greek island of Chalkidiki, because they drink a large amount of cystus tea.
The rock rose has a defensive effect. It ensures a healthy balance in the intestine and, for example, inhibits the well-known fungus Candida albicans, which can mess up the intestine. For this, too, several cups of tea are drunk throughout the day. Just try it. From October, over a period of four to six weeks, up to one liter of tea a day - then a week off - and then the cure starts again.
Forms of application
Cistus can be used orally, in the form of tea, capsules and mouthwashes, or externally as an envelope, pad, as an ointment or as an essential oil.
The rock rose has an external effect on eczema, neurodermatitis, acne, itching, fungal diseases, hemorrhoids and superficial wounds.
A concentrated tea infusion is prepared for the cistus skin care. To do this, boil about 10 grams of tea in 200 ml of water for about five minutes, strain, soak a cloth or a sponge with the tea, and dab the affected areas. Cistus compresses or envelopes are also possible.
If you don't like this, you can use a finished rock rose cream or rock rose ointment. The treatment is carried out at least four weeks twice a day, especially for chronic diseases such as neurodermatitis.
Daily drinking of rock tea. (Preparation see internal application) reinforces the positive effect. For acne, daily dabbing with a cotton ball soaked in rock tea helps. It can also be used as a tonic. The tea must be freshly brewed every day and then kept in the refrigerator.
In the case of hemorrhoids or fungal diseases in the vaginal area (vaginal fungus), a hip bath with rock rose is recommended. For this purpose, about 10 grams of rock rose are boiled in about 250 ml of water for five minutes, strained and then added to the lukewarm hip bath. A bathing time of five minutes is sufficient. Cistus ointment or cistus cream can be used as a supplement.
Internally, the rock rose is used for sore throats, colds, flu infections, gastric mucosal infections, diabetes, Lyme disease, for the removal of heavy metals and for prevention. How to prepare the necessary tea: Pour a heaping teaspoon full of cabbage with boiling water per cup (approx. 250 ml), let it steep for about five minutes and strain it. Immediately afterwards it is drinkable. Fresh mint, some peppermint tea or a few linden flowers change the taste. Depending on your taste, you can drink up to one liter of this per day.
Lozenges containing cyst are an alternative. Especially for sore throats and other cold symptoms, it is recommended to take them. If you have to travel by public transport every day, you can let a lozenge melt in your mouth during the journey so that you do not become infected. This strengthens the defense and protects against infection. These pastilles are also suitable for prevention and, above all, they are always ready to hand. The taste of the pastilles takes some getting used to, but with time this is no longer a problem. The small lozenges are available in different flavors.
In case of inflammation of the oral mucosa, aphthae, caries, periodontitis or after tooth extractions, ristling tea is rinsed and / or gargled.
The rock rose oil
The smell of essential rock rose oil is tart, slightly woody and somewhat reminiscent of musk. The oil has a calming, wound healing, relaxing, but also slightly stimulating effect. Rock rose oil is often used in meditation. This is also used against grief, psychological injuries or after shock experiences.
Not only internal but also external wounds respond well to it. For this, two to three drops of the oil are mixed with 10 ml propolis or marigold tincture, a compress is moistened with this and then placed on the wound.
The rock rose oil has a decongesting effect on the lymph and is therefore recommended as a massage oil during lymphatic drainage. To do this, mix three to four drops of rock rose oil with 20 ml of carrier oil (e.g. almond oil). The oil is also used for full body massages. The following mixture is suitable if the person is sad and needs some comfort: two drops of rock rose oil, two drops of sandalwood, two drops of lavender oil - mix the whole with about 50 ml of carrier oil (almond oil, sesame oil, jojoba oil).
Two to three drops, evaporated in the aroma lamp, help with negative experiences and restlessness - often mixed with essential lavender, lemon balm or orange oil. However, the aroma lamp should only burn for a maximum of two hours - afterwards it is better to take a break. Two to a maximum of four drops, depending on the size of the room, are sufficient.
Cystus oil is also good for a full bath: a drop of rock rose oil, a drop of rose oil and a drop of mandarin orange oil are added to a little cream and then added to the bath water. This not only smells wonderful, but soothes and consoles.
Tip for on the go: A drop of the oil on a handkerchief and smelling it again and again soothes, relaxes and increases well-being.
A cloth soaked in a little warmed almond oil, enriched with one or two drops of cystus oil, which is placed on the abdomen, helps with cystitis and cramps during menstruation.
In pregnancy, however, the oil has to be avoided because it is said to have a menstrual effect.
Important: Pay attention to quality when buying the oils!
Side effects are extremely rare. However, allergic reactions are possible when used as cystus oil. Before the oil gets on your skin (of course, always together with a carrier oil), you should try it on a small area, such as on the inside of your forearm. If any symptoms arise in connection with the external or internal application, the treatment must be stopped immediately. Everyone reacts differently and there is no "nothing can happen!".
The rock rose tea is also suitable for pregnant women, nursing mothers and children.
Which variety is the most effective?
The effectiveness of the gray-haired rock rose, the Cistus Incanus, has been proven with research results. This rock rose is said to have more healing properties and antioxidant properties than other species. However, the most diverse cystus variants are used. Experience reports also attribute these positive qualities. In any case, when buying, you should make sure that you get wild or organically grown varieties.
Cistus tea is now not only available in pharmacies, health food stores or health food stores, but also in well-stocked drugstores. One should refrain from tea bags or open tea, in which more precise declarations of origin and content cannot be seen. (sw)
