Two liters of water reduce the risk of painful gout attacks

Painful gout attacks: Drinking a lot reduces the risk
Health experts say that gout is one of the most common nutritional diseases in Germany. At irregular intervals, sufferers repeatedly experience very painful gout attacks. Experts recommend drinking a lot, preferably water.

Gout is one of the most common nutritional diseases
According to the German Society for Nutrition (DGE), gout is one of the "most common nutritional diseases" in adults. Around ten to 30 percent of men and up to six percent of women would have increased uric acid levels in the blood and about ten percent of them would develop gout during their lifetime.

Patients are advised to change their diet
Since food and drinks have a direct influence on the formation of uric acid, those affected are usually advised to change their diet. For example, meat, fish and alcohol should be avoided better.

Drink at least two liters a day
Adequate hydration is also essential. Those who are prone to gout attacks should drink at least two liters a day. A lack of water, known as dehydration, can be a trigger for gout, explains the professional association of German rheumatologists (BDRh) on the website "Rheumatologists on the Net".

Better avoid beer
In acute gout disease, it should even be three liters a day if no other diseases such as heart failure speak against it. “In addition to water, juice spritzers, herbal and fruit teas are also suitable. On the other hand, all alcoholic beverages must be avoided, since alcohol additionally inhibits uric acid excretion, ”explains Dr. Zinke, board member of the BDRh. Above all, beer should be avoided because it also contains many purines. "Even the non-alcoholic beer," said Dr. Prong.

Congenital metabolic disorder
In the metabolic disorder, which is often congenital, uric acid accumulates in the blood. The uric acid crystals that are deposited in the joints can finally trigger a painful attack of gout, usually the big toe joint is affected. If gout is left untreated, such attacks occur again and again. In the long term, this can lead to increasing joint destruction and persistent joint pain.

Reduce the risk of a gout attack
"For the treatment of gout, we primarily have effective medication available to suppress uric acid formation and inflammation," explains Dr. Prong. Adequate hydration also helps to dilute the amount of uric acid in the blood, thereby reducing the risk of gout attacks. (ad)
